VOLTA Basel 2019
D11 / Solo Show mit Paul Jacobsen
GALERIE VON&VON is pleased to present Paul Jacobsen, the former assistant of Rudolf Stingel, Jeff Koons and Sean Scully, in an eclectic Solo Show at VOLTA Basel 2019 (Booth #D11). Explore all presented artworks here.
Jacobsen was a head painter in the studios of Jeff Koons and Rudolf Stingel and works between the intersection of nature and technology. He developed the VOLTA booth to set a shocking visual statement as a Gesamtkunstwerk.
Center of the booth is a massive double “X”-construction made of charred wooden timber-trunks at the top and bottom, both held and divided by four charcoal flag drawings in between. The axis becomes an extension of the charcoal used in the drawing. The wooden axes frame the bigger drawings, complemented by smaller drawings on both side walls. The “X”-axis is furthermore extended by the centrally placed video artwork in the rear panel of the booth.
Jacobsen is a critical libertine, wrapping warnings in symbols, linked to his beliefs in a Utopian world order after the downfall of modern society. The Presidential Election in the U.S. in 2016 triggered him to rethink the association of a national flag as the embodiment of the pillars of a modern, liberal constitution.
